The start of a new year is the perfect time to give your wardrobe a fresh start. Wardrobe editing doesn’t just clear physical space—it also clears mental space, allowing you to rediscover your style, streamline your mornings, and focus on the pieces you truly love. Here are my top tips for decluttering and organising your wardrobe, paired with strategies to create a wishlist for key pieces that complete your style story.

1. Set the Scene

Before you dive in, prepare yourself for success:

  • Set aside time: Block out a few hours to focus solely on your wardrobe.
  • Gather supplies: You’ll need donation bags, a mirror, and perhaps a friend for a second opinion.
  • Create a vibe: Play music, grab a coffee, and make the process enjoyable!

2. Take Everything Out

Empty your wardrobe completely. Seeing all your items in one place helps you evaluate them with fresh eyes. This step also highlights duplicates or pieces you’ve forgotten about.


3. Follow the 4-Pile Rule

Sort each item into one of four piles:

  • Keep: Items you love, wear often, and that fit your current lifestyle.
  • Donate/Sell: Items in good condition but no longer serve you.
  • Recycle: Pieces that are too worn to donate.
  • Unsure: Place these in a separate box. If you don’t reach for them in three months, let them go.

4. Assess Each Piece Like a Stylist

When deciding what to keep, ask yourself:

  • Do I love it? If it doesn’t spark joy, it doesn’t belong.
  • Does it fit well? If not, can it be tailored?
  • Is it versatile? Can it be styled for multiple occasions?
  • Does it reflect my current style? If it no longer aligns, it’s time to part ways.

5. Organise What Remains

Give your wardrobe structure to make getting dressed a breeze:

  • Group by category: Hang tops, bottoms, dresses, etc., together.
  • Colour-code: Arrange items from light to dark for visual harmony.
  • Invest in uniform hangers: Slim, velvet hangers save space and keep garments neat.

6. Create Your Wishlist

Once your wardrobe is streamlined, identify gaps. Ask yourself:

  • What do I need for work, weekends, or special occasions?
  • Are there items I’ve always wanted but never prioritised?
  • Do I have enough basics, like neutral tops or well-fitting jeans?

Write down your wishlist, focusing on versatile, high-quality pieces that enhance your existing wardrobe. This ensures your future purchases align with your style goals.


7. Maintain the Momentum

Keep your wardrobe in check throughout the year:

  • Adopt a one-in, one-out rule: For every new item, remove one.
  • Schedule seasonal reviews: Repeat this process every few months to stay on top of your style.
  • Revisit your wishlist: Keep track of what you’ve acquired and what still feels essential.
