Leggings are back (and why this time is different)!

February 4, 2026

Leggings are back in the spotlight, but not in their 2016 “barely-there, worn-as-trousers” form. This revival is far more grown-up, considered and flattering which is why it’s resonating so strongly with women in midlife.

After years of hybrid working, busy schedules and a collective move towards comfort, women are no longer willing to sacrifice ease for style. Leggings answer that need but today’s versions are elevated, structured and designed to support the body rather than cling to it.

What’s changed is how we’re wearing them. They’re now styled as part of a polished outfit with longer layers, tailoring and premium fabrics rather than being the outfit themselves. Think of them as a modern alternative to skinny trousers rather than gym wear or loungewear.

They’re particularly appealing in midlife because:

  • They’re comfortable without feeling sloppy
  • They work with changes in body shape
  • They create a sleek base for layering
  • They transition easily from day to evening

When styled correctly, leggings can look confident, modern and intentional not nostalgic or dated.

How to wear leggings well (and avoid the Vicky Pollard/WAG trap)

The key to making leggings look stylish rather than sloppy is proportion, fabric and styling.

  • Choose thicker, opaque fabrics with stretch and structure
  • Look for details like seams, pintucks or a matte finish
  • Balance the slim silhouette with longer tops, knitwear or tailoring
  • Elevate the look with boots, loafers or trainers with a clean profile

Leggings should act as a foundation piece, not a statement.

Best legging styles to look for in midlife (and why they work)

1. Ponte or tailored leggings

Why: These feel closer to trousers than activewear. The thicker fabric smooths the leg, holds its shape and looks polished.

Style with: Longline blazers, fine knitwear, ankle boots or loafers.

Brands to explore:

  • M&S
  • Hobbs
  • Mint Velvet
  • Jigsaw

2. Stirrup leggings

Why: A very current nod to the noughties, but far more refined. The stirrup elongates the leg and stops fabric riding up.

Style with: Chunky knits, oversized shirts or sleek knit dresses.

Brands to explore:

  • Arket
  • COS
  • Hush

3. Leather-look or coated leggings

Why: These add texture and interest while remaining incredibly wearable. A matte or soft sheen finish looks far more premium than high-shine versions.

Style with: Cashmere knits, silk shirts, tailored coats.

Brands to explore:

  • Spanx
  • Reiss
  • Whistles

4. Split-hem or seam-front leggings

Why: Small design details instantly modernise leggings and give them a fashion-forward feel.

Style with: Pointed flats, trainers or ankle boots to show the detail.

Brands to explore:

  • ME+EM
  • Zara Studio (selectively)
  • Albaray

5. Premium performance leggings (styled smartly)

Why: When done well, these offer support, comfort and a clean silhouette, ideal for travel, errands and busy days.

Style with: Long coats, knitwear, structured bags.

Brands to explore:

Lululemon (avoid heavy logos)n should support your life, not dictate it.

Sweaty Betty (look for matte, minimal styles)

“Leggings aren’t about reliving the noughties, they’re about responding to how women actually live now. When chosen in the right fabric and styled with intention, they can be one of the most versatile, confidence-boosting pieces in a midlife wardrobe.”
